Before sunrise I am standing at hunebed D15, the hunebed of Loon. I want to photograph it in a misty atmosphere. It is a March day and cold. I try to imagine how sad scenes must have been when people buried their loved ones here. The day still hesitates a little at the start; the sun sees no chance of penetrating the mist properly. The dolmen stones lie as silent witnesses of a distant past, waiting for visitors to tell their stories of long ago. Four more capstones lie on top of the hunebed. Around the hunebed, many wreath stones are still there like a protective circle and the side and closing stones are all still in place.
Karla Leeftink prefers to photograph in the peace and quiet of early mornings with a hint of mysterious mist. The Drentsche-Aa region and the Reest valley are ideal for this with their frequently occurring misty landscapes.
