Icelandic horses in the Herikhuizerveld nature reserve (better known as the Posbank) during sunrise.
The Herikhuizerveld is a hilly moorland area that is part of the Veluwezoom National Park in the municipality of Rheden in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is owned by Natuurmonumenten.
The area is named after the nearby former farm Herikhuizen. It is also called Posbank, after the monument that stands on a hill on the northeast side of it.
The Herikhuizerveld is grazed by Icelandic ponies's and Veluwe heath sheep. The latter's sheepfold is located the adjacent Heuven estate. Boars and deer are also found in the area. Grazing management helps to ensure that the moor does not become overgrown with grass and trees. A shrub common in some places here is the gorse, a prickly plant. Already flowering in the winter months, the evergreen legume is quite rare in the Netherlands.
From the tops of some hills in the Herikhuizerveld, one can look out over the valley of the river IJssel far into Germany. There are several dry valleys in the area with a steep wall on one side and a more sloping wall on the other. One such dry valleys is the Hammock in the south-eastern part of the Herikhuizerveld.
