Wandering the streets of the medieval village of Paciano in Umbria, Italy, you stumble across some wonderful features like this old well, il pozzo, at the junction of two major roads, right in the middle of the village. In the background, the narrow road snakes uphill towards the Chiesa di San Giuseppe with its bell tower.
The village used to rely on this well, of course, and it was quite humbling to stand there and imagine the people, carts and horses/donkeys that would have visited this well in times past. It is like walking in their footsteps.
Paciano is on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy for good reason. It is a peaceful place to wander around and admire the architecture of the old village inside the medieval walls. It also has several excellent bars and restaurants and a boutique hotel that was given a prestigious award in 2022. So it is no surprise that the village is very popular with tourists.
