Jan Havickszoon Steen (Leiden, 1626 - buried 3 February 1679) was a Dutch painter from the 17th century, the time of the Northern Dutch baroque painting. His works are world famous for his humorous and ironic view of life. He is best known for his amusing paintings of messy and wild households, pub scenes and quacks trying to cure heartbreak with medicines. His repertoire, however, also includes serious history paintings, other genre scenes and a few portraits. The Dutch expressions 'a Jan Steen household' and 'bringing life to the brewery' are borrowed from him.
For almost 33 years now, Paul Meijering has been active with the paint brushes. As a 17- year old inspired youngster he joined the Academy of Arts in Enschede (Holland) in order to receive a native training in drawing- and painting technique.
