The ruff (Calidris pugnax) is a bird from the family of cuttlefish (Scolopacidae). The scientific name of the species was published as Tringa pugnax by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.[2] For a long time this species was placed as Philomachus pugnax in its own monotypic genus. The food consists of insects and larvae. It is a seriously threatened breeding bird in the Netherlands, which used to occur frequently in wet meadows.
The ruff is a stilt walker with a long neck. Males and females are very different (sexual dimorphism). The male is about 30 cm long, the female 24 cm, so a lot smaller. The male has a colourful collar and crest in the breeding plumage. The colours of this collar and crest differ from each other: even or banded with colours between black, reddish-brown, orange or white.
