Mrs Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, on a branch looking for a tasty fish. The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a water loving bird from the kingfisher family (Alcedinidae). It is a striking sight due to its contrasting blue and orange colors, but also a very shy species that is rarely seen. Alcedo atthis is the only kingfisher species that occurs in northern Europe including the Netherlands and Belgium, at least the subspecies Alcedo atthis ispida. Most kingfishers live in the tropics[2].
The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater (piscivore) and is thus strongly bound to water. It prefers running waters. In most of its range the species is common, but in some areas the kingfisher is threatened with extinction.
