The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a water-loving bird of the kingfisher family (Alcedinidae). It is a striking sight due to its distinctive blue and orange colours, but also a very shy species that is rarely seen. Alcedo atthis is the only kingfisher species that occurs in northern Europe including the Netherlands and Belgium, at least the subspecies Alcedo atthis ispida. Most kingfishers live in the tropics.
The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater (piscivore) and is therefore strongly water-bound. Because of its preference for steep walls for nesting, it is often found near running water, where steep banks naturally form as a result of erosion. Still water, rich in fish and vegetation, is also a good habitat. The species is common in most of its distribution area, but is threatened with extinction in some areas.
Hello, nice that you take a look in my shop. So my name is Gert Hilbink, living in Coevorden. I have been doing photography since I was 13, inspired by a biology teacher at the then U.L.O. school in Coevorden. Generally I mainly photograph nature but actually find everything that can fly very interesting. If you have any questions about my work, it is possible to contact me via the contact page of my website GertPhotography.nl
