Three boys playing.
Ray van Schaffelaar (1962) was born and raised in Amsterdam Slotervaart and currently lives with his wife and 2 sons in Diemen. He studied piano light music at the conservatory in Utrecht and then worked for more than 21 years at computer collective. Ray has been active as a photographer for 20 years now. As a photographer he focuses primarily on reportage and street photography.
His work is characterized by a subtle sense of composition and color, but above all by a great interest in people. His photographs show reality with a twist, so that they touch a layer of meaning that we, as spectators, recognize but do not see themselves.
"Photography has become my second nature instead of music. I always have the strong urge to capture moments. Every situation in life has fantastic moments. My goal is to steal those moments. In photography I follow my feeling ... blindly I would almost say ? "
In his spare time, Ray is a passionate jazz pianist and painter.
