This photo was taken on the beach at Cadzand-Bad in the Netherlands in October 2022. This orca had washed ashore and could not get back into the sea on it's own. The orca lay in the surf for hours. As the sun was setting, I took this picture. Unfortunately, the orca did not survive. In 2023, this photo was category winner at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in the 'Oceans, the bigger picture' category. Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 (#WPY59). All my pictures were taken in the wild, so nothing from the zoo! I have been photographing since I was twelve years old and the focus has always been on nature photography. In the Netherlands I mainly look at birds, but abroad mammals also have my interest. I often travel with the purpose of seeing a certain animal. For the story behind the pictures and many more pictures go to my website: https://www.naturebylennart.com.
