A leaf is one of the organs of ferns and seed plants. The leaves together form the plant's foliage.
The leaf-like structures of other plant organisms, including mosses and some algae, such as sea lettuce and kelp, have a different construction and should not be called leaves.
The leaf performs several functions, the two most important of which are photosynthesis and evaporation of water. Photosynthesis is used to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water in leaves under the influence of sunlight. In addition, by evaporation and capillarity, the leaves keep a flow of water going in the plant. This water contains nutrients that the plant has actively absorbed from the soil.
