Notting Hill Gate is a station of the London Underground on the Central Line, District Line and the Circle Linen 1891 the Central London Railway (CLR), later the Central Line, was formed to build an east-west line in a bored tunnel. This east-west line crossed the Kensington branch at Notting Hill Gate where platforms were then built to allow for interchange. The platforms of the CLR were built one above the other, for the subways to the west at 25 meters depth, for those to the east at 31 meters depth. This construction was chosen to avoid having to work under existing buildings. As was usual before World War I, passengers were transported by elevators between the station hall and the platforms. The CLR's station building was on the north side of the street, while the MR's building was on the south side, so that transfer passengers had to cross the street.
