A lone tree rising proudly in the middle of a calm river. The water stretches in both directions, reflecting the light of the sky above it. Behind the tree, a threatening sky, where dark clouds gather like a blanket smothering the sun. It looks like a storm is coming. The light is dark and gloomy, with little colour. It gives the picture a mystical look, like you might encounter in an old Dutch painting with the so-called "Dutch light" The combination of the lone tree in the middle of the river and the threatening sky behind it creates a powerful image that evokes emotions of loneliness, strength and melancholy. It is as if the tree symbolises the resilience of nature and the strength of the individual to stand against the elements, while the sky symbolises the unpredictable and sometimes threatening power of nature.
