A new landmark
Several thousand square metres of exhibition space, a list of artists ranging from Anselm Kiefer to Gerhard Richter, a varied programme and striking architecture in the chic DUISBURG INNENHAFEN - that is the MKM MUSEUM KÜPPERSMÜHLE FÜR MODERNE KUNST.
Opened in 1999, the MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst is now one of the leading art museums in the Ruhr region. Between industrial culture and white cube, the museum is housed in a former granary. The Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron transformed the building, where grain was stored until the 1970s, into a diverse centre for art with high, light-filled rooms. The staircase is not just a highlight for architecture fans. The extension, which directly adjoins the central building, increases the museum's exhibition space by 2,500 to a total of 6,100 square metres.
