Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (Paris, 29 December 1721 - Versailles, 15 April 1764), Marquise de Pompadour since 1745, was one of the most famous maîtresses, as a maîtresse meaning an extramarital friend or mistress, of King Louis XV of France. This French appellation literally means "mistress". The Surinamese-Dutch term is buitenvrouw.
Paintings show that she was seen as a beautiful woman, in addition to being popular in wealthy Parisian circles. Madame de Pompadour was an intelligent woman; her tastes - and those of the king - made the Rococo style flourishing at the time evolve into a more sober style.
From Madame de Pompadour is said to be the historical saying Après nous le déluge! ("After us the deluge!"). But she, like many others at the time, also showed great enthusiasm for the romantic ideas of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Francois Boucher (Paris, France 29 September 1703 - 30 May 1770) was a painter from the French school of rococo. In 1723, he won the competition for the Grand Prix. The artist is known for his lovely, romantic and sweet paintings with sensual undertones.
