About the artwork

The day of judgment, also known as the youngest day or the last judgment, is a concept for a day that is mentioned in Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious books as the day on which a judgment will be made on all people by God. Judgment Day is at the heart of the eschatology of these three abrahamic religions.
In several places in the Bible, both in the Old[2] and in the New Testament, there is talk of an end time, in which survivors and the dead will be judged. In Christian eschatology, Judgment Day occupies an important place, as shown by the number of entries in the Bible, as mentioned below. According to the Revelation of John, Judgment Day takes place during the Millennial Kingdom of Peace and is called the Judgment for the Great White Throne (of God) (Revelation 20:11). Then all the dead will rise from their graves to receive, together with those then living, the reward for their walk of life. Besides the devil and his fallen angels, those who have rejected the grace of God are banished to the 'outer darkness', where it is 'weeping and teeth grinding', and they are forever cut off from the presence of God.
Maerten de Vos, variations Ma(a)rten (Antwerp 1531 or 1532 - 3 December 1603) was a Southern Dutch painter. He was one of Antwerp's favourite painters for the refurbishment of churches after the iconoclasm.
