Manhattan is an island and one of the five boroughs of New York. Manhattan has 1,620,867 inhabitants and an area of 87.5 km², of which 28.0 km² is water. It is like New York County (colloquially named: Manhattan County) a county of the state of New York.
The island of Manhattan is 21.5 km long and 3.7 km wide (at its widest point). It is connected by bridges and tunnels to New Jersey to the west, the Bronx to the northeast, Brooklyn and Queens (the boroughs on Long Island) to the east and south. The only direct connection to New York's fifth borough, Staten Island, is a ferry that departs from The Battery. In the middle of the island is the large Central Park. The island attracts many tourists.
Manhattan is known for its skyscrapers, broad avenues, many yellow taxis and Wall Street financial center. The dense buildings with skyscrapers gave rise to the term Manhattanisation.
