Elianne van Turennout Profile picture An image manipulation of a woman wearing a gas mask as a skeletonised butterfly flies overhead. The Covid-19 issue is used in a variety of political ways. On the one hand, in Hungary it is used to restrict the rights of the press. Here in the Netherlands, it is used as an excuse to do nothing about climate policy and to exonerate farmers.

This description paints a powerful picture of the political manipulation of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the gas mask symbolising the health crisis and the skeletonised butterfly symbolising the ambiguity and dark consequences of these political manoeuvres.

The mention of Hungary and the Netherlands highlights the international dimension of this phenomenon and the different ways in which different governments use the pandemic to further their own political agendas.

The picture invites reflection on the impact of political manipulation on the response to the pandemic and on the broader issue of protecting democratic rights and freedoms.

In short, this image manipulation offers a powerful visual representation of the political dynamics surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, where the gas mask and butterfly are symbols of the complexity and ambiguity of these times. It invites critical thinking and awareness of the political reality we face.

It all started with a4 paper and HB pencils. As a child I was often impressed by how beautiful the world around me was. The urge to capture this beautiful world, and to show the people around me what I saw, was actually there from the beginning. If I remember correctly, I was about eleven years old when I first met the camera. Of course it was a simple compact camera with a ridiculous quality, but I enjoyed it.

I sometimes said I wanted to be a photographer, but of course you have one of the two parents who says, "Dream on." Strangely enough, I followed the sarcastic remark as advice, and still went to study photography.
