Monnickendam is a town in the municipality of Waterland, located on the Gouwzee in the Dutch province of North Holland.
At the end of this moat you can see the Great Church. The Gothic building stands on the Zarken, on the edge of the old town centre.
The construction of the church began after 1400. The choir was finished in 1450, the tower was erected between 1510 and 1550. The church has been Protestant since 1572. After that year the baptistery was removed. In 1644 the last bays of the ship were completed; around that time the spire was also renewed.
