Een monument gemaakt van de oude Skeiðará brug.
Deze brug was in 1996 weggespoeld na een Jökulhlaup. Vulkanische uitbarstingen onder een ijskap kunnen aanleiding geven tot een gletsjerdoorbraak ook wel Jökulhlaup genoemd.
Op 30 september 1996 vond er een grote vulkaanuitbarsting plaats. Dit gebeurde 500 meter onder het ijs van de Vatnajökull.
Er verzamelde zich heel veel water in het iets noordelijker gelegen vulkaanmeer Grimsvötn. Op 5 november was er zoveel water verzameld dat de druk van het water hoger was dan het ijs. Hierdoor ging het ijs drijven en het water vond een gat om uit te stromen.
Twee stromen kwamen onder de gletsjertong Skeidarajokull vandaan. De westelijke stroom was het heftigst.
IJsblokken zo hoog als flatgebouwen (van zo’n 6 verdiepingen) en puin kwamen met het water mee gespoeld. De bruggen en de afvoerdammen werden daardoor volledig vernield.
