In black and white, Highway US 163 takes on an almost timeless character. The ribbon of asphalt, with its brightly contrasting centre stripe, cuts tightly through the barren desert plain towards the dark silhouettes of Monument Valley.
The famous buttes rise like massive shadows, their shapes made even more dramatic by the lack of colour. The landscape now consists of deep shades of grey, harsh contrasts and soft transitions.
Above the scene, the sky fills with layered clouds that take on a striking texture in black and white: the bright areas resemble refracted light, while the dark cloud fields add tension. The clouds cast subtle, elongated shadows across the plain, adding depth to the scene.
The whole thing feels cinematic, quieter and rawer-a classic western setting that takes on an almost mythical feel through the monochrome palette.
