The Mookerheide, bathed in the evening light of the low sun. In August, the heather starts to bloom and turns into beautiful shades of purple. This hue is enhanced by the golden light in the hour before sunset. The Mookerheide or Mookerhei is a forest and heathland area east of Mook in the Dutch province of Limburg at an altitude of approximately 50 metres, south of Nijmegen. On the Mookerheide the Battle of the Mookerheide took place in 1574. Lodewijk van Nassau and Hendrik van Nassau, two younger brothers of William of Orange, fought here during the Eighty Years' War against the Spanish. The forest area between Nijmegen and Mook was rather a large heathland, which in its entirety was called the Mookerheide. At Molenhoek, the Heumense Schans can still be seen in the landscape. Natuurmonumenten has an area of 235 ha in the Mookerheide.
