The Sonnenborgh stronghold was built between 1544 and 1558 by Emperor Charles V to defend the city. The three other bastions he had built were Manenborgh, Sterrenburg and Morgenster. Professor Buys Ballot arranged for the observatory to be moved from the Smeetoren, where meteorological observations were already being made, to Sonnenborgh in the mid-19th century. In 1854, he founded the Royal Meteorological Institute (KNMI) here. After KNMI moved to De Bilt, Sonnenborgh was once again all about observatories. Now it houses Sonnenborgh - museum & observatory. I took this photo on 20 April 2018.
