Oil on panel Are all the boundaries, all the frameworks, that we impose on ourselves really that valuable?
René Maagdenberg (1966, Rotterdam), after art school in Rotterdam in the late 1980s, continued to develop autodidactically into an artist who cannot be pigeonholed. In an extensive and rather diverse body of work, I try to combine my wonder, amazement and stupor in different disciplines and materials, using humour and poetry.
Paintings with a base of mainly oil and acrylic paint, sometimes realistic, sometimes abstract, following what the work demands. Cloth, panel, but also tabletop, slide screen, wall or cabinet door; almost anything is a possible background.
Illustrations and cartoons for various clients in various magazines and other printed matter, which have now evolved into a fully-fledged digital oeuvre, in which, in addition to commissioned work, a sometimes bizarre world of free work has emerged. I also fill my time with prose, poetry, lyrics and songs or a collaboration with artist Pieter Zandvliet; the PieReneters, on a fault line between surrealism, comics and graffiti.
