Neeltje Jans is about 285 hectares in size and is located halfway between Schouwen and Noord-Beveland on the Eastern Scheldt barrier, but nevertheless belongs to the municipality of Veere on Walcheren. Neeltje Jans is the name of the boat that ran aground on the sandbank; it is an old folk name for the patron goddess Nehalennia.
