In the 17th century, the portrait was a popular genre for the wealthy bourgeoisie. It gave them the opportunity to have themselves portrayed in full to promote themselves in this way as leading citizens in society.
This work of art is a nod to the work of Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck - The portrait of Maria van Strijp from 1652.
What would such a portrait look like in the 21st century? That was the question with which I began this work of art. A contemporary version of the famous portrait from the 17th century. Starring, a beautiful woman.
Although most portraits from that time depict a standing person, Maria van Strijp poses very casually for this portrait. Sitting on a chair, with her arm slung over the armrest.
This nonchalance is also reflected in the painting style with coarse brushstrokes, subtle drips and splashes.
The grayish colors with pink, black and white in the lead create a feminine, soft yet tough look.
