The church of H.H. Nicolaas and Barbara, or Oude Kerk , is a Roman Catholic parish church in the centre of the Dutch-Limburg town of Valkenburg. The partly Romanesque, partly Gothic and partly Neo-Gothic building is a national monument.
The church is situated in the centre of Valkenburg. On the north side is a park, on which a perroen with a statue of St. Nicolas is placed: the Nicolaas-perroen. Here you will also find a Maria chapel, the Peace Flame and the Sacred Heart statue. On the east side is a marlstone gate, which closes the entrance from the Grotestraat. On the south side is the presbytery.
The church is a late Gothic pseudo-basilica from the 14th century with a transept and an older tower with Romanesque characteristics. The choir was extended around 1830. The western extension around the tower was built by Pierre Cuypers in the last quarter of the 19th century. The other extensions, including the extension of the transepts, date from the beginning of the 20th century.
