Amid the green landscape of Leek lies Nienoord Castle, a stately structure that holds centuries of history. Originally built in the 16th century as a moat castle, it was later rebuilt in neo-classical style. The current sunny yellow facade with its elegant windows, ornate balcony and richly detailed roof structure exudes grandeur and sophistication.
Once the centre of power and culture in the region, Nienoord was inhabited by distinguished families such as the Van Ewsums and the Van Panhuys, who expanded and embellished the estate over the centuries.
The castle is surrounded by water features, gardens and avenues that transport the visitor to a world of peace and harmony. Against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, the building shines like a golden jewel in the Groningen landscape.
Today, Nienoord is a lively place where history and culture come together: it houses the National Carriage Museum, among others, and hosts exhibitions and events.
Nienoord Castle is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a living symbol of Northern Dutch heritage - a place where past and present meet in full glory.
