There is a particular style to the old doorways in Umbria, Italy. This wonderful old wooden door in Tavernelle, Umbria is a good example.
Here we see marble steps lead up to quite ornate columns and cornices which contain the two door entrance. Above the door is a half moon window and metal grill. This traditional feature allows light to enter the space behind the door. The room behind the door is often an entrance hallway, particularly in a shared building.
The door itself is wonderful old wood, covered in metal stud work and with two round door knockers.
Tavernelle is a market town not far from the medieval walled town of Panicale. The market is held every Monday morning and is a regular magnet for tourists and locals alike.
But the town is so much more than the market, and a wander around the streets reveals many gems like this doorway.
