The Oude Markt, also known as the Houtmarkt, is a historic square in the centre of the Dutch city of Zutphen. The square owes its name to its former function as a timber market, where wood was traded for building houses and ships in the Middle Ages.
The Oude Markt is surrounded by old buildings and has a rich history. For instance, a city hall was built in the 17th century and remains the focal point of the square to this day. Also located on the square is the impressive Saint Walburgiskerk, which dates back to the 11th century and has withstood various wars and disasters. Apart from the historical buildings, the Old Market today also hosts cosy terraces, restaurants and shops. This makes the square a popular place for tourists and locals to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink, or to shop in the many boutiques and antique shops. All in all, the Old Market is a wonderful place where history and modern amenities go hand in hand, and where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an ancient city.
