Dalmatian Pelicans are among the largest bird species on the planet. Their habitat extends from south-eastern Europe through Eurasia to the coast of China. Despite their huge habitat, there is a high risk that the slightest disease could decimate their numbers. Personally, I have been following them for several years and try to travel to Kerkini Lake in central Macedonia at least once a year to photograph them. Given the good fish stock and the fact that they are fed there, they should find ideal conditions to survive there, but bird flu has wreaked havoc on the population there too. Their wingspan of up to 350cm is huge, but what for me is their most distinctive feature is their penetrating gaze. The pride and self-confidence it exudes never leaves me unmoved.
Nature fascinated me from a young age. Romping in the fields, fishing in local ponds and observing birds and animals was fascinating. Meanwhile, I have visited many dozens of countries. In the beginning mainly with a fishing rod in my hand, but now I am almost exclusively accompanied by my camera. Oceania is the only continent I haven't visited yet. On several of those continents, I have been part of expeditions. I prefer to stay in a tent far away from civilisation. Preferably also invisible to wild life so that they let me behold their secrets. Actually, little has changed in all these years, because nature still fascinates me. I can also lose myself very easily in the moment and it would not be the first time that I put the camera to one side and enjoy the spectacle unfolding before me.
