Portrait of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) and his five children, Adriaen Hanneman Huygens was secretary to the stadholders, poet and composer. He was also a stay-at-home father, who undertook part of the upbringing himself. In 1639, Hanneman made this portrait of Huygens and his children. He painted them in six medallions surrounded by imitation sculpture. The painting was given a place in Huygens' house, near the Mauritshuis. The portrait lacks Huygens' wife Suzanne van Baerle. She had died two years earlier in childbirth at the birth of their youngest daughter.
