The redshank (Tringa totanus) is a bird from the family of beach runners and snipes (Scolopacidae) with genus name Tringa (horsemen).
Other species of horsemen are: white rider, forest rider, black rider and green-legged rider.
It can be 25 to 30 centimetres in size. Important feature are the bright red legs. The plumage consists of a dark grey-brown upper side with light spots, a white underside and spotted flanks. Furthermore, the bird has a red beak with a dark tip, a light brown neck, chest and head with dark stripes. It has a white dorsal wedge and a wide, white hind wing.
