This is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing was created using drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting consists of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a photo I took during a walk along a small lake near the Develbos in Zwijndrecht. It was a beautiful sunny day in January. Here and there there was ice. It was clear and the temperature was around freezing point. The sun shone brightly and so did the reed plumes along the water. Rarely have I seen the water of the lake so fresh and blue. When I have such beauty in front of my eyes, I take my camera.
It took years before I wanted to do something with the picture. I always liked the image when I saw it pass by while digging through my archives, but no creative aspirations emerged.
Once I got into digital drawing and painting I decided to take this picture in hand. The first impression was always good when I looked at the photo, but upon closer inspection I came across quite a few flaws that bothered me anyway. Thanks to the retouching and painting techniques I've mastered in the meantime, I was able to turn the photo into a work of art that made me retain the first impression I got from the image. The texture of the artwork is also particularly beautiful and will look impressive on a canvas.
The best thing I like about this work is that it looks wonderfully fresh. But also dreamy. The plumes of reeds are beautifully lit up by the bright sun and the fresh blue water in which the light of the sunshine shines looks quite beguiling.
