Sa Pa is a thị xã in northern Vietnam on the border with the People's Republic of China. The district lies in the west of Lào Cai province. In Sa Pa lies the eponymous thị trấn Sa Pa. A majority of Hmong live in the district, but Yao and Vietnamese also live there.
Sa Pa is known for its many cascading rice fields. The highest point in Indochina, Mount Phan-xi-păng with an altitude of 3,143 m is located at the three-district point of Sa Pa district and Than Uyên and Phong Thổ districts, the latter two in Lai Châu province. The average altitude in the district is between 1,500 and 1,800 m.
