This is a street view of Shad Thames which is an area just to the side of Tower Bridge in London, United Kingdom.
This whole area was originally an old Victorian warehousing complex, built in 1873, that used to store, for example, grain, tea and spices. In more recent times, the warehouses were closed in the early 1920 s and this area was been redeveloped as luxury apartments and office buildings in the 1980 s. But the area has retained the charm of the older architecture. The old warehouses have retained as have their signage for example. The most striking thing, however, is the metal walkways, or overhead gantries, linking buildings on the Thames waterfront at Butlers Wharf with the warehouses across the street. These walkways would have been used to roll barrels and other cargo between the buildings. A real piece of the past and a wonderful place to walk around with a camera as I did!
