Scheepmakershaven (the ship builders harbour) in Rotterdam was dug in the early seventeenth century as part of the Water City, the urban expansion between Schielands High Seawall and the river Nieuwe Maas. Until 1940 this was a lively district with warehouses, merchant houses and a lot of maritime activity. With the bombing of May 14, 1940 almost all of the surrounding buildings were destroyed. After the war a rather uninspiring business district was built here, which in recent years has undergone a metamorphosis due to the construction of a number of residential towers . Three of these towers can be seen here reflected in the water of the Scheepmakershaven .
