The Dongba symbols are the only hieroglyphs still in use in the world. These hieroglyphs have many symbols related to nature.
The symbols are made by the Naxi people from Xinzhu Village in Yunnan province in China.
Xinzhu Village is now a cultural heritage site. Ancient manuscripts written in Dongba symbols have been inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register.
There are now about 60 Dongba priests left who can read and write the Dongba script. They are mostly over 70 years old. Efforts are being made to enthuse the younger generation about the script by visiting schools in the region.
