Ever since the early 1950s, the municipality has wanted to build a sports hall in IJmuiden. For years, various plans are forged, without actually being built. In 1959, there was a plan to build a sports hall on the Gijzenveltplantsoen, but it was rejected at the end of that year. However, a gymnasium was built there in the early 1960s. At the end of 1959, there was also a plan to build a gymnasium on Moerbergplantsoen, to which the sports hall could later be added, but the government's approval was awaited. After several years, the green light is given for the gymnasium. In 1964, construction started on the Kennemer gym on Moerbergplantsoen on the corner with Torricellistraat. The gym was designed by architect Henk Peters, the municipal architect of Velsen in the period 1957-1978. The front facade on Moerbergplantsoen will feature a wall relief, wide and high, by visual artist Bouke Ylstra (1933-2009). The relief depicts three people playing sports and is aptly named 'Sports Figures'. Kennemer Hall has never been extended with a sports hall.
