Italian medieval walled towns such as Panicale in Umbria, Italy, are labyrinths of streets and architecture crammed into small spaces. No space is wasted!
In Panicale, it is really interesting to see how the architecture has developed over the years. In this shot, there is a traditional stone built building on the left and a more modern look to a newly restored and decorated building that has been plastered and painted a pale shade of pink. There are strict regulations on the colors that can be used by the way. However, between the two buildings is a fabulous little structure, comprising an archway over which is a room and what appears to be an extension on the top, perhaps a roof terrace?
The archway itself leads into the main square of the town and you can just glimpse the edge of the Christmas Tree that was on display on the day I took this photograph.
