Starling birds murmuration in a clear sky during a calm sunset at the end of the day. Huge groups of starlings in the sky that move in shape-shifting clouds before landing in the trees for the night.
The birds fly together in a coordinated pattern, changing direction and speed as a single unit, creating swirling and pulsating shapes in the sky. The movements are thought to be a way for the birds to evade predators and stay together in the flock, and the synchronized patterns create a mesmerizing visual display.
Studies show birds fly according to fixed wing aerodynamics, while rolling when turning (thus losing lift) and they coordinate with a only the 7 neighbouring birds while trying to stay above the sleeping site while moving at relative fixed speed.
