Still Life with Fruit (1905) by Odilon Redon. Original from the Yale University Art Gallery.
Redon began drawing at an early age and received a drawing award at school when he was ten. When he was fifteen, he began taking drawing lessons. At his father's urging, he changed it to architecture, but failed the entrance exams in Paris.
Back in Bordeaux, he began sculpting and was taught etching and lithography by Rodolphe Bresdin. His artistic career ended when he had to enlist in 1870 to fight in the Franco-Prussian War. After the war, he moved to Paris. There he led a reclusive life and until he was in his fifties worked almost exclusively in black and white, with charcoal and in lithographs.
