Lighthouses are usually tall towers; this one is not, because it stands on a high hill. It is the remote front tower of Stoer, a small place a the Scottish west coast northwest of Ullapool. Closer by are the towns of Clachtoll, Achmelvich and Lochinver. It is the west side of the Highlands. The lighthouse is a hotel, where you can book a room. The place is also one of the measuring points, where records are kept to see dolphins and whales.
The photo was taken almost symmetrically, and the sky adds to the Scottish character.
Landscapes and townscapes are my favourite subjects. I search for beauty in the image; that can come from any of the compositional elements such as lines, shapes, rhythms, light/dark, colour combinations. For me a photograph is successful, when I can hang it on the wall and enjoy it for months without getting irritated about imperfections. My subjects are mostly outside, in nature or in the city. On the many trips I make, but also close to home. My photographs are regularly published in newspapers and magazines. My photographs have also been shown in several exhibitions in the Alphen region. I learned a lot in the three years (2007 to 2010) that I lived, worked and photographed in the United States. Meanwhile, I have published two photo books with pictures of Alphen aan den Rijn, where I live.
