The Dwingelderveld National Park is the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe. Wet lowlands and high sand ridges alternate in the vast Dwingelderveld. Here you will find heathland, woods, juniper bushes, shifting sands and over forty fens. Some of these ponds were created during the ice age, others are the result of peat excavation.
The national park is located in the Dutch province of Drenthe, roughly in the triangle Dwingeloo, Ruinen and Beilen.
