This is a view down a dark, shady alleyway in Citta delle Pieve, Umbria, Italy looking towards an archway at the end. The archway has a window suggesting a room or passageway is on top of it, linking the two buildings. Look at the bright sunshine pouring in at that end of the alley.
Citta della Pieve is a medieval walled town and this is a typical street that you will find there. The terraced buildings to the left curve round slightly towards the left side of the archway. Streetlights, vital at night in the darkness, are overshadowed by the incredibly bright rays of light hitting both the inside of the archway and the houses above it to the right.
This was a breathtaking view as I stood and looked at it. You can see how blinding the sunshine is compared to the shade in the street itself. In the winter, this means it is cold there, particularly as Citta della Pieve is high on a mountain. In the summer, though, this is a haven of cool shade and a welcome retreat from the hot sun.
