In Mackenzie Country with its golden-brown plumed grassland lies Lake Tekapo. This highland gets its name from a Scotsman who tried to hide about a thousand stolen sheep here in 1855. The fine rocky sands of the rivers that feed the lake lay an almost luminous blue-green haze over the lake. Taka=sleeping mat, po=night is the meaning in Maori. The story goes that some Maori were sleeping here, woke up with a jolt, rolled up their sleeping mats and fled.
