Assisi, is the birthplace of St Francis (San Francesco) the patron saint of Italy. This town on a mountainside in Umbria in Central Italy, therefore has special religious significance. It is a symbol of peace and holds regular interfaith religious meetings such as on the World Day Of Peace.
The town is on several levels with many tourist and religious landmarks and a main street that leads to the Basilica of St Francis, the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order Of Friars Minor Conventual. It is also one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy.
Here we see tourists on the steep steps leading past cloisters on the climb up to the Basilica of St Francis. This beautiful religious architecture stands out as it is built in white marble which reflects the sun. This photo art image is based on a photograph taken by my husband Graham Irwin. I have worked on it digitally to create a watercolour effect.
