On the occasion of the Floriade in 1960, architect Huig Maaskant and contractor J.P. van Eesteren erected the Euromast in Het Park, near the entrance to the Maas tunnel.
The building was officially opened by Princess Beatrix on March 25, 1960. The location was strategically chosen; whoever drove to Rotterdam on the motorways of the time, saw the 107-metre high tower (including the flagpole) protrude directly in front of him above the city. After the opening, the city continued to grow and the buildings became higher. After a few years, buildings rose above the Euromast, such as the building of the Medical Faculty on the Westzeedijk in 1968, ten metres higher.
In 1970, an 85-metre-high structure was erected on the Euromast; the Space Tower, making the Euromast the tallest structure in Rotterdam. The tower now has a total height of 185 metres. Visitors can use the Euroscope, an all-round glazed lift, from the Euroscope deck at 112 metres to the highest point at 180 metres. The lift turns slowly around, so that visitors can look down on all sides. Visitors are taken to the original highest point with two lifts that both travel four meters per second.
Anthony Malefijt is a passionated hobby photographer based in Rotterdam. He spends most of his time capturing landscapes in his own unique way. He is a self taught photographer who was born and raised in the beautiful city Rotterdam in Holland. Photographing the city with his first Nikon D3200 DSLR is where the passion for photography started. Now a few years later (and cameras, haha) it's not only cities anymore. Landscape photography is the main focus at this moment.
