The Golden Bend in the Herengracht in Amsterdam from the east, Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, 1671 - 1672 Amsterdam's explosive population growth meant that the city had to be enlarged several times in the 17th century. This painting shows part of the world-famous ring of canals. The bend depicted was the domain of the very rich. When Berckheyde painted this sunlit cityscape, some houses were not yet completed. A number of plots were even undeveloped. Rijksmuseum Rights: CC0
