The golden eagle has a length of 80 to 93 cm with a wingspan of 1.90 to 2.25 m, making it one of the largest eagles in the northern hemisphere. Its powerful legs have long, pointed claws. Its maximum age in the wild is about 25 years; in captivity, this bird species can live to about 46 years. Its plumage is mostly dark brown, with slightly extended, golden feathers in the neck. This plumage is the same in both sexes. The golden eagle is extremely fast. With its maximum speed during a diving flight of 320 km/h, it is the second fastest bird on earth, second only to the peregrine falcon at 350 km/h.
The golden eagle has very good eyesight. The golden eagle can see a rabbit from a height of two kilometres. Not only rabbits are eaten, but also marmots, squirrels, fowl, turtles, snakes and carrion. Prey is usually caught after a long, low glide.
Golden eagles are opportunistic hunters that attack all kinds of animal species. In very rare cases, they also attack large animals such as deer and coyotes. In 2013, a sika deer was recorded being killed and eaten, and in 2004 a bear cub was attacked. No attacks on humans are known.
Hello, nice that you take a look in my shop. So my name is Gert Hilbink, living in Coevorden. I have been doing photography since I was 13, inspired by a biology teacher at the then U.L.O. school in Coevorden. Generally I mainly photograph nature but actually find everything that can fly very interesting.
