The Groningen Blaarkop
The Groninger Blaarkop. A native and authentic breed of cattle, a so-called dual-purpose breed. Unfortunately a rare breed, because as a result of the industrialisation of agriculture and the accompanying specialisation per agricultural branch, more and more other breeds were chosen. A dual-purpose cattle breed is very well suited to be kept for milk and high-quality meat. This is extra sustainable. The Blaarkop cow fits in very well with our natural and austere management (pure grass-fed from natural grassland). Our cows are of great value for biodiversity.
We keep our Blaarkop cows at several locations in and around the Onlanden. At our location in Sandebuur, they enjoy walking outside, as well as at our domestic plots at our agricultural location in Leutingewolde. We also lease and graze estates from Natuurmonumenten in Paterswolde.
They enjoy the grass and fresh air all day from April/May to October/November. During the other months, the cows spend the winter in the barn. During the winter period, we also use outdoor grazing: weather permitting, the cows can go outside in groups during the day.
This photo was taken in Slochteren, Groningen, during winter. You can see the beautiful frost on the reeds of this beautiful area.
